About Bristol
Bristol City is located in the south-west of England in the United Kingdom. The City has a very rich and interesting history. Bristol began as a village called Brigg Stow. By the tenth century it had expanded into a town and one hundred years later opened a mint. There was a weekly trade market and Bristol had begun trading with Dublin. During the middle ages Bristolians began fishing off the coast of Iceland and in 1497 John Cabot made his historic voyage to Newfoundland following which Bristol's fishing trade route now incorporated North America.
In 1373 Bristol had spread out considerably and was given county status.
Isambard Kingdom Brunel built the Great Western Railway from London to Bristol in the 1830s. He was also the project engineer for the Clifton Suspension Bridge, pictured above.By the eighteenth century the City was fully involved with the slave trade which also included trade in tobacco, sugar and rum. A new trade triangle emerged as Bristol traded with the West Indies and America.
The University of Bristol was founded in 1909 with the main building, the Wills Memorial Hall being built in 1925.
New industries opened up in the City such as Chocolate, Tobacco, Engineering, Chemicals, Zinc, Furniture and Pottery.
World War II took its toll on the City with the death of 1,299 people. Heavy German bombing destroyed around 3,000 buildings and damaging around 90,000. In 1945 the Council commissioned the building of numerous new homes on the outskirts of Bristol.
